3rd Poom Candidate
My decade-long journey in TaeKwonDo began under the most unexpected of
circumstances—a special Valentine's Day promotion that allowed my brother and me to enroll in
a 2-for-1 deal. I vividly recall my first lesson, even though I was merely three years old and too
young to join the regular class. Instead, I began with private lessons, guided by the kind woman
at the front desk who introduced me to the foundational Ap Kubi stance and taught me the
correct way to punch.
As the years passed, my repertoire of forms and techniques expanded, and with it, my
passion for TaeKwonDo blossomed. Despite over a decade of practice, I often feel as though
each day could be my first, such is the boundless depth of this martial art. My journey has taken
me across the United States, allowing me to compete with some of the world's finest athletes.
These experiences have taught me that TaeKwonDo offers a lifetime of learning and sharing.
Reflecting on my competition experiences, they have always been exhilarating, though
my first competition was anything but easy. The vast stadium, the cacophony of sparring
matches, and the vibrant demonstrations left me feeling intimidated. Although I left that
competition with a silver medal and a heart full of nerves, I also carried a sense of pride. Over
time, frequent competitions and rigorous training have greatly bolstered my confidence and
enjoyment of the sport.
Throughout my decade in TaeKwonDo, I have been fortunate to have countless role
models and coaches who have shaped me into the martial artist I am today. However, one
constant presence has been my mother and brother, who has supported me since my very first
lesson. Another big influence in my Taekwondo journey is my dad. He's always there to drive me
to practice and give me a hand when I need it. I'm really thankful for all he does.
This essay owes its existence to the amazing guidance of my Grand Master, James Park.
From the moment I first stepped into Grand Master Park’s school, my Taekwondo journey was
changed for the better. Under his expert guidance, I have learned countless new techniques and
refined those I already possessed, pushing my limits further than I ever thought possible. Before
meeting GM Park, I had never practiced weapon forms. Now, I can perform with both my bo
staff and my sword. This remarkable progress would have been unattainable without his
instruction. In the years preceding my training with GM Park, I participated in numerous sport
poomsae competitions but rarely achieved high placements. However, after just one year of
training under his guidance, I achieved my highest score to date at the USAT Nationals in
Jacksonville, Florida. Each day I train with GM Park, he is always eager to help me correct my
mistakes, demonstrating endless patience and dedication. His personal attention has brought me
significant growth in my Taekwondo skills. Thank you Grand Master Park for supporting me in
my promotion to third Poom.
